The corporate architecture of Moonrise
Jan Koum’s 102-metre Feadship carries a name drawn from consumer technology rather than maritime tradition, signalling a shift in how new money approaches…

A vessel’s position is the boat’s, not the owner’s. Ownership is as reported, not certified.
The 2025 delivery of Moonrise places a Cayman-flagged hull at the Ligurean Sea, built by the Dutch cooperative that dominates the 100-metre class. The name abandons classical precedent for a digital-age label, mirroring the WhatsApp acquisition that funded the steel.
The name Moonrise does not reference a deity, a constellation, or a historical voyage. It borrows directly from the lexicon of mobile messaging, echoing the phonetic play that created WhatsApp. Jan Koum incorporated the app on his thirty-third birthday, choosing a phrase that sounded like a greeting rather than a mythological anchor. The same linguistic shortcut now sits on the transom of a 102-metre motor yacht delivered in 2025.
Koum’s capacity to order this hull derives entirely from the February 2014 acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook for US$19,300,000,000. He incorporated WhatsApp Inc in California on his thirty-third birthday, shortly after Apple added push notification ability to apps in June 2009. The feature allowed the application to ping users upon message receipt, driving adoption among Russian-speaking contacts before convincing co-founder Brian Acton to join with US$250,000 in seed funding. Koum served as chief executive until April 2018, when he stepped down following disputes with the parent company. Rather than forfeiting unvested shares, he remained formally employed through a rest-and-vest arrangement that extracted approximately US$450,000,000 in stock. By October 2023 Forbes estimated his net worth at US$15,200,000,000; the register lists him at US$16,100,000,000. The capital that bought the steel was generated in Silicon Valley, not in shipping or commodities.
The cooperative model and the westpoort dock
Feadship operates as a cooperative between Royal Van Lent Shipyard and Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw, sharing the De Voogt Naval Architects design centre in Hoofddorp. The 102-metre length places Moonrise squarely within the range handled by the Amsterdam yard in Westpoort, which opened in early 2019 and accommodates vessels up to 160 metres. The Kaag facility, which maintains slipways for yachts of up to 100 metres, would be too small for this hull. The Amsterdam dock also serves refits, but Moonrise is a new build.
The cooperative traces its roots to 1849, when the Akerboom family purchased a shipyard off the Dutch coast. They merged with the Van Lent family in 1927, and in 1949 naval architect Henri de Voogt founded Feadship as an export association intended to sell to American clients. Van Lent received a royal charter in 2001 and De Vries followed in 2006, each marking their centenary. LVMH acquired Royal Van Lent in 2008, integrating it into a broader luxury portfolio while preserving the yard’s custom-building mandate. The Makkum location, opened in 2005, provides deep water access and a 170-metre construction shed capable of handling vessels exceeding 120 metres, though Moonrise remains assigned to the Amsterdam facility. Feadship joined the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization in September 2025, a move that coincides with the year of her delivery.
Cayman registration and the CREEK
Moonrise flies the Cayman Islands flag and holds her home port at The Creek, a marina on the island of Grand Cayman. The registration choice removes the hull from the direct oversight of European maritime authorities and aligns it with a jurisdiction known for opaque ownership structures. The Cayman registry requires specific safety and manning standards, but the administrative distance allows the owner to keep the vessel off the primary Mediterranean cruising routes during construction and initial sea trials. The home port designation anchors the legal administration to a Caribbean tax haven rather than a European commercial hub.
AIS broadcasts place her at 42.37° N, 11.20° E in the Ligurean Sea. The track shows a vessel operating well outside the typical summer anchorage zones near Cap d’Antibes or Port Hercule. Koum acquired Château de la Garoupe in November 2023 for approximately €65,000,000, previously owned by Boris Berezovsky, yet the yacht’s current position points north along the Italian coast. The coordinates indicate a transit rather than a prolonged stay. The vessel’s category places her among Tech founders who have transitioned liquid equity into physical assets, a cohort that increasingly favours Cayman registration to separate personal residence from operational base.
The technical footprint
The IMO identifier 9949869 and MMSI 319306800 assign unique identities to the hull for international traffic monitoring. The Cayman Islands flag state mandates compliance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, which governs subdivision, fire protection, and life-saving appliances. The 4124 gross tonnes reflect the total enclosed volume of the ship, calculated according to the International Tonnage Convention, rather than displacement weight.
Feadship’s order book has historically favoured custom builds over series production, with the Amsterdam yard responsible for an average of two launches per year alongside the Kaag facility. The 102-metre configuration represents a middle ground in the cooperative’s output, avoiding the extreme tonnage challenges of the 150-metre-plus segment while utilising the full breadth of the Westpoort dry dock. The vessel’s category places her among Tech founders who have transitioned liquid equity into physical assets.
The absence of a rename
The register contains only the single name Moonrise. There is no record of a previous designation, which means the hull did not change hands during construction or undergo a reflagging event that typically triggers a name change. Some owners alter a vessel’s name to distance themselves from a prior buyer or to comply with sanctions, but the continuity of the designation suggests Koum retained control throughout the build phase.
The decision to retain the original name aligns with the straightforward provenance of the funding. The WhatsApp sale provided a clear liquidity event, and the subsequent rest-and-vest mechanism preserved the capital base without requiring external financing or complex syndication. The hull remains a direct expression of that singular transaction, carrying a label chosen for its phonetic simplicity rather than its maritime pedigree.
