You shouldn’t have to trust us

You should be able to check us. That’s the whole idea behind On the record.

Why we exist

Most people get their news from outlets that lean one way. The facts are often the same; what changes is which ones come first and whose voices get heard. After a while it’s hard to tell the facts from the framing.

So we read outlets across the spectrum, pull out the facts they share, and write each story three ways: left, center and right. Every fact links to the outlet that reported it. You can read the version you’d normally skip and see for yourself that the facts don’t move.

Written by AI, checked by code

Our stories are written by AI, and we say so on every one. The AI runs on our own computers, not an outside service. Before anything goes up, code checks every quote, number and source against the articles it came from. A version that fails is thrown out.

We think AI news should show its work more than any other kind. Here’s exactly how we write and what we check.

Who pays for this

We pay for it ourselves. We take no money from investors, donors, advertisers or sponsors, so no one outside On the record has a say in what we cover or how.

  • Self-funded100%
  • Investors, donors, advertisers or sponsors0%
  • Paid placementNever

Running it is cheap. The computer that writes the stories uses about 60 cents of electricity a day, and we pay no AI service fees.

Who’s responsible
