Why MOONRISE and PI share a length but not an origin

Two Feadships measure the same to the metre. The matching figures mask a wider divergence in beam, gross tonnage, and ownership.

A vessel’s position is the boat’s, not the owner’s. Ownership is as reported, not certified.

MOONRISE and PI sit side by side in the Feadship register at exactly one hundred metres. The matching figures mask a wider divergence in beam, gross tonnage, and ownership that points to a yard repeating a proven envelope rather than casting a single hull twice.

Who owns MOONRISE and PI, and how did they pay?

MOONRISE and PI are both built by Feadship. They are registered at nearly identical lengths. One measures 99.95 metres. The other measures 100.0 metres. This similarity invites questions about their design. Are they sisterships? Do they share a mould?

The answer is no. The two yachts were built for different owners. They have different beams. They carry different volumes of space. Their shared length reflects a standard size for the shipyard, not a shared blueprint.

Feadship operates as a cooperative of two Dutch yards. Royal Van Lent and Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw share a design centre. They build custom yachts for wealthy clients. A common length simplifies production. It does not mean the yachts are related.

Jan Koum co-founded WhatsApp. Facebook acquired the app in 2014 for $19.3 billion. Forbes lists his net worth at $15.2 billion. He ordered MOONRISE from Feadship. She was delivered in 2020.

PI belongs to Howard Schultz. He led Starbucks for many years. He served as chairman and chief executive officer. He also owned the Seattle SuperSonics basketball team. He commissioned PI from Feadship. She is scheduled for delivery in 2025.

The two men have very different backgrounds. Koum is a computer programmer. Schultz is a businessman who built a coffee empire. Their wealth came from different sources. Their tastes in yachts differ accordingly. Both chose Feadship for its reputation.

MOONRISE, 99.95 m, carries a beam of 16.0 metres and registers at 3,900 gross tons, reflecting Jan Koum's preference for wider deck space.

Why do they share a length if they are different?

Length is a marketing number. Clients often request round figures. A 100-metre yacht sounds impressive. It is easier to sell than 99.95 metres. The difference is negligible for navigation or docking. The shipyard accommodates this preference.

Feadship has built many yachts near this size. The 100-metre mark is a common threshold. It fits within the capabilities of their slipways. It also fits the expectations of buyers who want a large vessel without going into the 110-metre class.

Royal Van Lent has slipways for yachts up to 100 metres. This infrastructure shapes what they can build efficiently. Using a standard length reduces engineering costs. It allows the yard to reuse certain design elements. It does not force identical interiors.

The two yachts diverge sharply after the length. MOONRISE is wider. Her beam is 16.0 metres. PI is narrower. Her beam is 14.0 metres. This 2-metre difference changes the interior layout significantly. It affects stability and speed profiles.

Side-by-side comparison of the two hulls shows the identical length requirement masking a 2.0 metre beam difference and a 915 gt tonnage gap.

What is the volume difference between them?

Gross tonnage measures internal volume. It is a calculation of enclosed space. MOONRISE registers at 3,900 gross tons. PI registers at 2,985 gross tons. The gap is 915 gross tons. This is a substantial difference in living space.

The wider beam of MOONRISE explains her higher tonnage. More width allows for more cabins and larger public areas. PI is slimmer. She prioritises speed or hydrodynamics over raw volume. The owners chose different priorities.

De Voogt Naval Architects designed both yachts. They work for Feadship. They create custom plans for each client. They used similar length constraints. But they tailored the beams to suit the owners. One owner wanted space. The other may have wanted efficiency.

The estimated values also differ. MOONRISE is valued at $330 million. PI is valued at $350 million. The price gap is small. It reflects the cost of new construction versus existing assets. PI is newer. New builds often command a premium.

Where are these yachts sailing now?

AIS data tracks their movements. MOONRISE is currently in the West Mediterranean. Her last known position was near 37.46° N, 13.18° E. She flies the Cayman Islands flag. Her home port is George Town.

PI is far away. She is in the South Pacific. Her last reported position was at 17.54° S, 149.57° W. She also flies the Cayman Islands flag. Her home port is The Creek. The distance between them is vast.

PI tracks through the South Pacific at 17.54° S, 149.57° W, operating independently from the Mediterranean circuit frequented by many European-flagged competitors. Follow her live position →

Their deployment patterns are unrelated. MOONRISE stays in European waters. PI travels to remote regions. This suggests different usage styles. Koum may prefer proximity to Europe. Schultz may enjoy long-range cruising. The yachts support both lifestyles.

Does Feadship build sister yachts?

Feadship is a cooperative. Two yards share resources. They aim for consistency in quality. They do not typically build exact duplicates. Each yacht is custom. The clients specify their own requirements. The designers adapt to those needs.

Shared lengths are common. Shared beams are rare. Shared volumes are even rarer. When two yachts match on all three, it is unusual. But MOONRISE and PI only match on length. The rest of the specification differs.

The evidence does not support a shared origin. There is no indication they came from the same mould. They are products of the same yard. They follow the same standards. But they are distinct vessels with distinct histories.

The convergence on paper is a result of market norms. Buyers like round numbers. Shipyards like efficient production. Designers like proven envelopes. The result is a family resemblance. It is not a blood relation. The two yots stand alone.
